SPORTS DAY - DACS SCHOOL

oHoH has been involved in Shree Durga Adarsha Community School (DACS) since 2006. It was the first school where we started teaching and donating materials. We donated items like a big laser printer, footballs, volleyballs and larger items like a complete volleyball court including volleyball stands, the volleyball net itself (of course) and a huge bamboo fence around the playground so the balls would not go over the steep cliff which is right next to the playground (as seen on the picture below).

During a 5 year teaching period we also participated in several extracurricular activities like Sports Day, Parents Day, school tours and picnics.

Once (sometimes twice) a year the school organizes a Sports Day. Since Nepal doesn't have the right materials for a proper Sports Day many schools make up easy but funny games. Games like musical chairs, running, spoon races, etc are easy and cheap to organise.

Each year around 150 children participate in the DACS Sports Day. The sports in which the children can participate are as follow:

For the lower classes (Nursery - class 2):

running
musical chairs
spoon race
candy catch
passing the ball
quiz with questions

For the higher classes (class 3 - class 8):

running
football
volleyball
dodge ball
balloon race
sack-race
quiz with questions

During Sports Day many villagers are paying the school a visit. They want to see how their children are doing? And besides the sport, children also participate in some singing and dancing acts. You can compare this with the halftime act during, for instance, a football match. Children - and teachers - will sing a song or dance to keep the wild crowd entertained...!
